Welcome to Pine Orchard Kikos Blog.  On these pages, I will try to provide you with information on what's going on at the farm.  I'll try to keep everyone up to date on our herd, the farm itself and improvements to help make maintenance more "user friendly".

Livestock Day at Pine Orchard Kikos

We moved all of the ladies from the summer fields to their winter paddocks and split them up for breeding. SDR Danny Boy Bear (our 100% New Zealander) welcomed our five 100% New Zealand does and Wilma (one of the registered purebreds). PHB Pine Orchard Pete welcomed the remaining 5 registered purebred does and Annie. The breeding season can now commence!

In addition, earlier in the summer, we moved this year’s kids from the summer field to another area and separated the bucklings and doelings. Since these fields are now needed for breeding, we moved the bucklings and doelings back out to the summer fields, still keeping them separated.

2020 Kids Registration

During the last week of August, 2020, we prepared the paperwork for NKR and submitted it for the 5 kids that we are registering.  Of course, there's more to the registration than just completing the application.  Physically, we had to apply ear tags as well as insert microchips and take hair samples for DNA testing.  The folks at NKR are extremely helpful and great to work with.  Hopefully, the paperwork was all in order and we will receive their papers in a few weeks.  By the way, microchipping the kids is not as intimidating as it might seem.  We always insert ours in the tail web of the animal and while there, we pull a hair sample.  When taking a hair sample, always check to make sure that you've gotten some roots with the hair.
